  • La Sagrada Familia - You can’t go to Barcelona for your first time without a trip to La Sagrada Familia basilica. Designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudi, the La Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882. It is truly a site to see from the intricate details, to the striking size, and the interesting history. The interior of the basilica creates a transcendent experience with its colorful stain glass windows and unique tree-like columns. Also, don’t skip the opportunity to go up into one of the towers so you can admire the view from the top and enjoy exploring down the long spiraling staircase on the way back down. Visiting the La Sagrada Familia is an awe-inspiring experience that you will never forget!

  • Explore the Gothic Quarter - One of my favorite experiences in Barcelona was exploring the Gothic Quarter! Be sure to visit the Muralla Romana, a Roman wall constructed in 218 AD. You can choose from various tours or simply stroll through the area, and either way, you’ll be captivated by the medieval charm of the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona!

  • Take the gondola up to Montjuïc Castle - Montjuïc Castle is a historic fortress perched atop Montjuïc Hill in Barcelona, offering panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. Originally built in the 17th century, the castle has served various military and strategic purposes over the years. The gondola ride to Montjuïc Castle is a highlight, offering breathtaking views of the city of Barcelona and sea along the way. Once at the top, you can explore the castle’s rich history while taking in its stunning vistas and wandering through its beautiful gardens. • Admire the works for Antoni Gaudi - Antoni Gaudí, a renowned architect who lived from 1852 to 1926, transformed the architectural landscape of Barcelona. Beyond La Sagrada Familia, his distinctive works are scattered throughout the city. You can either join guided tours to explore these sites or discover them independently as you navigate the city. Casa Batlló is must-see masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí. This vibrant and culturally significant building showcases Gaudí's unique architectural style and is a prominent landmark in Barcelona. Take a Day Trip!

One of the highlights of our Barcelona visit was exploring the surrounding areas. While guided tours are available from Barcelona, we preferred to rent a car and venture out on our own. If you're looking to escape the city and enhance your trip, here are two spots you'll definitely enjoy!

  • Girona, Spain - Girona, Spain, is a charming city renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture and picturesque streets. Step back into Medieval times when you enter it’s Old Quarter boasting with narrow, winding alleys, the impressive Girona Cathedral, and the colorful houses lining the Onyar River. The streets are lined with charming restaurants and boutique shops, so think about staying for dinner and enjoying a glass of wine at a sidewalk café in this historic gem. Rich in history and culture, Girona offers a blend of ancient heritage and vibrant local life, making it a delightful destination for exploration!

Traveler’s Tip: If you’ve rent a car to take this journey, be sure to set your GPS to a parking garage just outside the Old Quarter. Avoid setting it to the town center of the Old Quarter, or you might find yourself navigating through tight, narrow medieval streets that could cause a bit of stress—trust me, I’m speaking from experience!

  • Costa Brava - Costa Brava is a stunning coastal fishing town offering sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea. Savor lunch and a spritz at one of its charming waterfront cafés. We visited during the off-season, so the town was quiet, but I can only imagine the delight of basking in the sun on its beautiful beaches and enjoying the town’s natural splendor during the warmer months!

Unique Souvenirs

If you’re seeking a unique souvenir to commemorate your trip to Barcelona, consider custom handmade espadrilles. I purchased a pair for my daughter, and they were not only beautiful but also fascinating to watch being crafted!

Getting Around- Public Transport

Navigating Barcelona is made easy with its efficient public transport system, which includes buses, metro, and regional rail services. The integrated fare system and convenient travel options are essential for both locals and tourists to explore the city efficiently. We found Uber cars readily available as well.
